It takes a village to raise a child, but what happens when the village catches fire and the children run off to the forest with the wolves?

Adolescence is as much about adulthood as it is about its namesake. The world has become so complicated, so quickly; cultural upheavals that used to take years now take days. There is a demand for participation in today’s (and every today thereafter) vernacular for the very sake of understanding the people that speak it. We’ve come to a point in time where entire languages are being created overnight.

The horrible culmination of this separation of generations, and the focus of this show, is the very basic misunderstanding of masculinity and empathy. The algorithm feeds our boys this toxicity behind our backs, so readily available, as Eddie himself vocalizes in the final episode when speaking of his own experience with social media. This is something so utterly new, so utterly different, that the fathers can’t possibly see it taking root in their sons.

We’ve become a world that exists within the very question that Eddie asks himself: my father made me with clenched fists and stone faces, and I made my son. So am I worse than my father was?

Parents that did nothing wrong have reared sons that renounce the world of their creators. They refuse to participate in the social dance of prior generations, and instead take the simple way out within the secrecy of their own rooms.

This leads to a palpable tension that’s ever-present in this show, a tension between the old world and the new. Fathers that don’t understand their sons. Sons that despise the women that don’t want them. Pure poison leaking from the phones that they hold at the dinner table across from the very parents whose job it is to prevent this.

But how can we possibly raise children when they refuse to be raised? How can we rear someone that is so completely wrong about the spark of emotion within them that they turn away when we describe its warmth to them?

We see a ray of hope in Luke and his son Adam; here, there is a son willing to guide his father into the new world, and equally as important, a father that is willing to be guided. But there is still resistance. The tectonic plates still grind against each other with misunderstandings and frustrations, but Luke’s patience avoids the impending earthquake. Luke realizes that we can no longer passively raise our children. We cannot leave them locked in their rooms, falling into whatever deep black hole of hatred the algorithm feeds them.

This show displays a problem in a poetic and profound way, but it also presents a solution: pay attention. It’s not enough to love our children anymore, we must remind them every day with our actions, and we must remain close. Learn the language and treat the sickness, not the symptoms, lest we flounder in futility like the school systems that have failed us and our families (through no fault of their own).

Everything in this series is purposeful. The acting is phenomenal. The camerawork and script are exceptional. Adolescence presents itself as something raw, but it’s not a chicken breast in the frozen food section; it’s a steak tartare from Ramsey.
